TRIN (Arms Index)

Set up TRIN

  1. Sign in to TickSurfers Chart with a Pro subscription.
  2. Open Studies, search for TRIN, and add the indicator.
  3. Open the indicator settings and choose a market under Symbol: NYSE, Nasdaq-100, All-US, or S&P 500.

What TRIN measures

The Arms Index compares advancing and declining stocks with advancing and declining volume:

TRIN = (advancing stocks / declining stocks) / (advancing volume / declining volume).

A reading below 1 means the advancing-to-declining volume ratio exceeds the advancing-to-declining stock ratio. Above 1, the stock ratio exceeds the volume ratio. These readings describe market breadth; they do not guarantee a price move.

Settings and display

  • Symbol: selects the market used for the TRIN data, independently of the symbol on your price chart. NYSE is the default.
  • Raw Calculate: off by default, using the selected TRIN index data. Enable it to calculate the ratio from advancing stocks, declining stocks, advancing volume, and declining volume for that market.
  • Enable Thresholds: displays reference lines at 3.0, 1.0, and 0.5. Enabled by default.
  • Line color: changes the line display color.
  • Plots: choose line, candlestick, or OHLC display. When Raw Calculate is enabled, OHLC bars use the calculated value for all four prices.

If history is unavailable

Check that your Pro subscription is active and that data is available for the selected market and timeframe. Raw Calculate requires all four breadth series. If the chart reports that history is unavailable, try another market or contact support.
